CPAN 1.94 fixes Solaris untar issue

In my earlier post about using local::lib I commented that CPAN wouldn’t untar with the Solaris shipped tar program, and you had to use GNU tar from OpenCSW or Blastwave. 1.94 appears to fix the problem and untars just fine with the native Solaris tar. This means you no longer need to set ‘tar’ in CPAN to CSW’s, you can leave the default OS tar set and it will work just fine.

  1. It looks like the link to your “earlier post” is broken. I did find it by clicking perl, but was confused for a bit!

I found your post because I was having trouble installing Bundle::CPAN via CPAN.pm. Even now, it was trying to grab a 1.94xx which still had too long of pathnames. I manually downloaded 1.9452 from cpan.org, installed it, and then was able to properly use CPAN.pm. So I’m good now.

    • Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the broken link heads up! I’ve fixed it now. I too found out recently that newer 1.94xx broke the file length rule, again :( It does look increasingly like gnu tar is the only solution.
